NO PLAN? - SHAME ON YOU!

Jack can’t believe his ears! Some clubs don’t have strategic plans you say? Noooo this can’t be true at all. Jack is dumbfounded as to why some clubs don’t have a strategic plan. How can your club have direction without a plan? How can they set targets? 

How do they know how the club is performing without something to measure against? If you don’t have a plan then you are planning to fail, you’ve all heard that before, well it’s true! Jack say’s there are plenty of resources available to help you with this and you can find links to these on the Bowls Wellington website. 

A strategic plan does not need to be a large document, nor does it need to encompass every detail, but it does need a direction. From this you can drive an action plan and before you know it, things are happening. Do it now or plan to fail!

RUN A CASUAL EVENT - IT AIN'T HARD SAYS JACK!

Jack reckons running a successful casual bowls event is not too hard at all, it’s getting the participants that can be a little tricky! Ignore the know it all’s and take it from someone who has been there!
But if you’re not too sure on how to fill your casual events then find a club that ran a successful event last year and pick the brains of the organiser.
A great looking flyer is a great start. NO, you don’t have to fill it with a lot of jargon, just the basic details. Casual bowlers are not interested in why you play the game or what it can do for their health or the benefits of playing, they just want some post work fun & games. 

Jack has run several extremely successful casual bowls programmes along with his trusty sidekick and he can tell you with confidence that if you do it right, it won’t take too much effort to fill greens. Forget the paper, use social media!
For a start, make your flyer bright, eye catching and informative. Remember, a little is a lot. Place, Date, time, t…

OPPORTUNITY GONE BEGGING?

Jack reckons that some clubs may be missing the boat on opening day. What are your thoughts on this topic? 

Would you rather invite dignitaries to your opening event or invite locals from your surrounding neighbourhood and open up the possibilities of new memberships whether they be Full Playing, Social or Casual. 

Seems like an opportunity gone begging. Jack reckons you could turn this day into an informative, fun and prosperous event, rather than just the same old formalities.

DO IT RIGHT SAYS JACK!

Jack says when it comes to promoting your club, DO IT RIGHT! How many clubs don’t have a website? Too many reckons Jack. 

How can you even begin to give your club the recognition it deserves without having a website? Jack is aware that it is another expense, but at the end of the day it doesn’t have to be a large expense if you do your homework! There are plenty of options here but you need to do some research. 



Without a website, you’re letting the club down. People don’t look through the yellow pages these days, they scan the internet. If you do have a website, then it is important to keep it fresh and up to date. There Is nothing worse than visiting a site that is 2 years out of date, it will turn people away!

TO PAY OR NOT TO PAY?

Jack says a good secretary is worth his or her weight in gold!
Let’s put aside the fact the a secretary gives up their personal time to take on the task and is essentially a volunteer, Jack feels the amount of hours that a good secretary can put in during a week actually warrants them receiving an income as most do far more than their allocated secretarial duties.  Jack is not the first to say this!
Jack thinks the majority are well aware that it is difficult for a club to survive on membership fees and rely on said members to support the bar to the extent that the club is financially secure. Jack reckons you would be making a move in the right direction if your club employed a manager to promote and grow your club on a full time or part time basis. .
Don’t leave it until the last hour, give it some serious thought at your executive meeting, do  some investigation, what have you got to lose? Jack says this is good advice for all clubs, not just those that are a little behind the 8 ball c…

The World doesn't Revolve Around Individuals!

Jack has noticed in the past and recently that some bowlers think the Centre should revolve their programme around them. Tough says Jack!

Sorry, but the Centre can't be responsible for revolving the programme around your summer vacation or the gala you entered up north.

Given the already tight schedule and limited reserve space for postponed events, it is hard enough already to organise a suitable programme Jack says.

When you take into account all of the Centre events, Bowls NZ events & Rep dates, there is very little space to play with.

So Jack suggests waiting to see the programme before scheduling anything else if you are worried about missing out!

TO BE ANONYMOUS OR NOT TO BE ANONYMOUS.........THAT IS THE QUESTION?

There has been a small discussion on Jack's blog recently about anonymous comments.

Jack wan'ts to know your thoughts on ANONYMOUS COMMENTS.Should they be allowed or should we make everyone sign their name to their comments prior to posting? 

Jack personally has no problem with anonymous comments but what do you think?

DOES A NEW SEASON BRING NEW EVENTS?

Another season has ended and didn’t it go by quickly? And as fast as it went, you can be sure that the new season will come around just as fast.
Are you prepared?
Here is one item that Jack thinks every good committee should consider before launching into the new season.
The Programme! Galas and Tournaments.
So many simply grab last years programme and tweak the dates to suit the upcoming season, done, so easy. Jack says STOP! Why put in the same old as last year when you had events that never filled in the form of galas and tournaments, how does that make sense? Even if they did work, don’t rely on it working for the following season. What worked yesterday won’t necessarily work tomorrow. Besides, you don’t want it to be the same event, you want it to be bigger and better!
If it failed, start from scratch, the bowlers sent you a message by not fronting up, listen to it!
If it worked, sit down and work out how you can make it better. Whatever you do, don’t just sit back and think it will lo…

THE RULES

Jack says abide by the rules, if that doesn’t suit then this is not the game for you.
Rules and regulations are made to be broken? Jack say’s “Hell No”!
What is the point in having rules and regulations if some feel they are above  said rules and regulations breach them at their leisure. There are not a lot but it only takes one and for all those good people abiding by the book, how’s it fair on them?
At the end of the day, lawn bowls is a sport and is meant to be played in the spirit of good sportsmanship, if it isn’t then what’s the point playing at all.
But let’s not tar everyone with the same brush, Jack enjoys the odd game played within the boundaries of good sportsmanship but more importantly, with good friends which includes friendly banter and plenty of laughs.
When the game is done and dusted, if you didn’t enjoy playing, win or lose, then you really need to ask yourself …. “Is this the game for me”?

CHANGE IN THE AIR!

Jack reckons there is a lot of it in the air currently. The Bowls NZ CEO Kerry Clark has resigned and the new replacement Mark Cameron will take over the reigns on the 3rd July 2017.
Chris Wilson, Bowls NZ National Participation and Development Manager has also resigned, his last day in the role is the 18th May.
With the end of the season loom-ing, how much change will take place within your club?
Jack reckons change should be looked upon as a positive move forward. Fresh blood, fresh en-ergy, fresh ideas. That isn’t to say the predecessor was not up to scratch, it simply means that not everyone thinks the same and with new people coming into roles, they bring a new enthusi-asm and a different perspective.
So Jack encourages those who are currently contemplating tak-ing on a role within their club to step up and give it your best. Ig-nore those around you who are of negative energy and concen-trate on the task ahead.

SO EASY - BUT SO MANY AREN'T DOING IT!!!

Jack reckons every club should take advantage when bowlers turn up at their greens.
The easiest sure fire way to make some extra income….fire up the BBQ, throw on some sausages, sauce, mustard, bread…..so easy! Everyone loves a BBQ and when the Bowlers smell it cooking while they are out on the green, you can bet your bowls they’ll be lining up even if they bought their lunch with them.
Next, whip out some raffles…...but don’t just leave it sit-ting on a table in the corner unattended, you’ll sell nothing that way, pick it up and walk it round the bowlers. Good prizes mean good ticket sales, don’t make 1st prize a $5.00 meat pack.

SO WHAT'S NEW? NOTHING!

Jack hasn't seen anything new emerge from clubs this year so far. Same old stuff. Wasn't it Albert Einstein that first said ... "If you always do what you've always doneyou will always get what you've always got"?

Ain't that the truth? Jack is not sure why some clubs continue to pump out the same old event's they did previous years......and expect a different result?
